Yellow Balau (pronounced Bal-Ow) - Bangkirai - is a very durable hardwood and one of the most popular species in the UK for hardwood decking. It's a hard, heavy and strong timber that is well suited to deck construction.
With a mixture of warm colours of golden browns, light browns and pale reddish-brown, Yellow Balau offers a unique colour range which will sit beautifully within a natural environment.
Guidelines of Performance Evaluation of Sustainable Forest Management and Timber Verification for Permit Holder or on Private Forest. The new regulation is known as the Timber Legality Assurance System (or SVLK in Indonesian).
This is an Indonesian effort to assure the legality of its timber products, which is in line with the trend of major timber market globally. This is in accordance with the Regulation No.995/2010 (Timber Regulation) adopted by the European Union in 2013.
The “Indonesian Legal Wood” certificate provides irrefutable proofs that timber products do not come from illegal sources. All Indonesian timber-related industrial units, primary or secondary will have a legality certificate and are audited independently by the National Accreditation.
The SVLK (Timber Legality Verification) certificate guarantees that the operator /timber industry has complied with the legality standards and criteria.
SVLK Operations
P. 38/Menhut-‐II/2009 revised as P68/Menhut-‐II/2011 stipulates that the forestry business unit must get certified for Sustainable Forest Management (SFM), or at the minimum be certified for legality. Further, all timber-related industrial units, either primary or secondary industry, have to obtain a legality certificate.
Sustainable Forest Management (“PHPL”) or legality assessment or audit is conducted independently assessor/verifier institutions accredited by the National Accreditation Body and are monitored by NGOs or civil society.
By the end of 2011 assessment of SFM to management unit or permit holder operating on various forest management types had been conducted on a total area of around 8.8 million Has.
Timber Legality Verification (VLK) has also been conducted in natural forest and plantation forest covering a total of around 800,000 Ha. The VLK has also been conducted in 216 factories.

Key Properties
-
Appearance: Produced predominantly from the heartwood, Yellow Balau can vary in colour from reddish-brown to a more olive or darker blackish brown. It has an interlocking grain, fine uniform texture and a surface that is almost entirely free of knots and other natural defects. Occasional pinhole and hit and miss is acceptable within the grading rules of Yellow Balau decking.
-
Durability: Yellow Balau has a natural resistance to moisture, decay and insect damage. With a proven life expectancy of 50+ years (when correctly maintained), it has a Durability Class 2 (BS EN 350-2) (durable) rating and is known to be one of the toughest and most durable hardwoods on earth.
-
Stability: Wood is a hygroscopic organic material that takes up and releases moisture according to the temperature and the relative humidity of the ambient air. As wood releases moisture it will shrink (usually during summer) and as it absorbs moisture (in the winter months) it will expand. The rate of expansion and contraction will vary according to the grain orientation of the wood. This means that some pieces will expand or contract more than others, so there may be minor variances in the width of the boards (known as tangential shrinkage). Shrinkage in the thickness (radial) is minimal and length (longitudinal) virtually non-existent.
-
Density & Hardness: Yellow Balau is the hardest of all commercially available hardwood species; in fact, it’s one of the hardest woods on Earth. It has a Janka scale rating of 3510 lb/in2 (3 times harder than Oak) and weighs in at 960 - 12000 kg/m3 when dry. As a result, it’s highly resistant to impact and abrasion.
-
Grading: Silva's Yellow Balau decking is 'Select Premium' grade which has excellent characteristics. Its appearance is almost entirely free of knots.
-
Sourcing: Silva's Yellow Balau decking is manufactured in Indonesia from the highest quality wood fibre. Rather than buying on an 'ad-hoc' basis from different suppliers with varying quality standards, we have been buying from a single reputable source for several years to ensure quality and consistency.
